Reasons to Visit Ethiopia
Ethiopia, in the Horn of Africa, is a rugged, landlocked country split by the Great Rift Valley. With archaeological finds dating back more than 3 million years, it’s a place of ancient culture. Among its important sites are Lalibela with its rock-cut Christian churches from the 12th–13th centuries. Aksum is the ruins of an ancient city with obelisks, tombs, castles and Our Lady Mary of Zion church.
Ethiopia is an inexhaustible source of wonder for travelers — a sprawling country of ancient African civilization, colorful festivals, breath-taking landscapes, diverse tribal culture, and amazingly friendly people. Ethiopia, once called Abyssinia, has beckoned explorers, writers, and adventure seekers for thousands of years. It’s as exotic and exciting as it sounds. After all, this is the land where it all began. Now, it’s your turn to experience this truly magical land!
Ethiopia has a rich history which can be seen through its historical structures. The 11 churches of Lalibela , for instance, were built during the 12th and 13th centuries. These churches are cut from rock, and they are absolutely incredible. The Castle of Fasilides, built in the 17th century, is another fascinating place to visit. This castle has taken little damage over the centuries and is a popular destination among tourists. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Ethiopia has an incredible array of beautiful sights to be seen. Among these are the Simien Mountains , the Danakil Depression, and the Blue Nile Falls. All these places are breathtaking, and it’s worth trying to visit at least one of them if you travel to Ethiopia. Ethiopia’s sights span both high and low: Ras Dashen , which is the highest mountain in Ethiopia and the tenth-highest mountain in Africa.
The National Museum of Ethiopia, situated in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa , holds the replica of Lucy, the skeleton of a female Australopithecus afarensis which lived around 3.5 million years ago. The fossil was discovered on November 24th, 1974.
Ethiopia, as well as having beautiful scenery, also has beautiful wildlife. Ethiopia has many national parks, such as Awash National Park, Abijatta Shalla Lakes National Park,Mago National Park, and more. These parks, along with the lakes of the Great Rift Valley, are home to rare species of birds and animals, such as the Mountain Nyala, the African antelope, the Walia Ibex, the mountain horned goats, and the Ethiopian wolf.
Ethiopian food covers a wide spectrum. The most commonplace meal, which Ethiopians can eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, is Injera. This consists of a huge pancake-like sponge, which is the Injera, which is made from Teff flour. The Injera is covered with different types of Wats (stews), like Chicken Wat , Fish Wat , and Lamb Wat. The Injera is broken off and dipped into the different Wats, then eaten. Another popular dish is Tibs , which is a spicy butter-fried beef. And if you’re a vegetarian, you can enjoy dishes like Shiro Wat.
